The Challenge

Sproughton CE Primary School is a Church of England village primary in Suffolk with a close-knit community, strong values and a genuine warmth that visitors notice from the moment they arrive. The challenge was building a website that communicated all of this online — to parents researching primary school options, to the community the school serves and to Ofsted when they review parent-facing communications.

The previous website had served the school for many years but was no longer adequate — difficult to navigate on mobile devices, falling short of DfE statutory requirements in several areas, and visually outdated in ways that no longer represented the quality and character of the school.

Our Approach

Working with schools requires a particular kind of patience and sensitivity. Headteachers are among the busiest people in public life, and a website project should not add to their burden. Our approach was to handle as much of the complexity as possible ourselves, making the decisions we could make and involving the headteacher only where her specific knowledge of the school was essential.

We began with a statutory audit — a complete checklist of the DfE requirements for Church of England primary schools, covering everything from the Collective Worship policy through to SEND information and complaints procedures. Every required element was identified and planned before we touched the design.

The website design took its cue from the school’s Christian ethos: warm, inclusive and community-focused. The colour palette referenced the school’s existing branding, the navigation was simplified to put parent-essential information front and centre, and the tone of the content was clear and welcoming without being informal.

A school photography session followed, conducted in full compliance with the school’s safeguarding policy and consent requirements. We captured the full life of the school: classroom learning, playtime, assemblies, specialist lessons and the outdoor environment. The final library of over 100 images gave the school material for the website, newsletters, social media and the prospectus for years to come.

The Solution

The delivered website met every DfE requirement, passed WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standards and was presented to governors at first review without requiring revisions. The content management system was simple enough for any member of the admin team to update independently.

The photography library was delivered with a clear filing system and usage guidance, making it easy for the school to use the images consistently across all communications.

Outcome

The headteacher was delighted with the result — she told us that Nick had understood exactly what was needed and had made the whole process feel manageable. The governor body approved the website at first presentation, which the headteacher noted was “not something that happens very often.”

Parental feedback on the clarity and accessibility of school information improved noticeably following the launch.

If your school needs a website refresh and photography that genuinely reflects your community, we’d love to help.
