Lexden Springs Special School — Website Refresh
A compassionate, accessible website refresh for a Colchester special school — designed to communicate warmth and inclusion to families while meeting Ofsted requirements and handling policy publication with ease.

The situation
Lexden Springs Special School serves children with complex needs in Colchester. The families who visit its website are often making big, careful decisions — sometimes for the first time, sometimes at a hard moment. They need to feel that the school will understand their child, and they need to find the right information quickly.
The old site didn’t do that justice. It also had to meet Ofsted’s rules on what a school website must publish — policies, SEN information, statutory pages — without piling extra work onto busy staff. So the brief was simple to say and easy to get wrong: warm, clear, compliant, and kind.
What we did
A welcoming, plain-English design
We rebuilt the site around the people using it. Natural imagery, plain-English descriptions of the school’s provision, and a tone that feels human rather than institutional. Nothing clinical, nothing buried.
Navigation that respects the visitor
Parents and carers arrive with a lot on their minds. We kept the structure shallow and obvious, so the things people need most are one click away, not three menus deep.
Built-in accessibility
This site had to work for everyone. We made accessibility a foundation, not an afterthought — clean code, strong contrast, keyboard-friendly navigation and WCAG standards throughout, so the site works across a wide range of access needs.
Easy policy publishing
We added a simple document system so any staff member can upload, update and retire policies without calling IT. The school stays Ofsted-compliant, and nobody’s day gets harder.
The result
Lexden Springs now has a digital front door that matches the quality of what happens inside the school. Key information is easier to find, parent communication improved, and the compliance side is handled — all without adding to staff workload. The site loads fast on everything from a phone at the school gate to a tablet at home.
For a school looking after some of the most valued learners in Essex, getting this right matters in ways that go well beyond marketing.
